České inovace na jednom místě

Ochrana duševního vlastnictví, do které spadají patenty, užitné vzory, průmyslové vzory, autorská práva a další, je nedílnou a nutnou součástí každé úspěšné inovace. Velmi proto děkujeme za podporu našeho projektu Úřadu průmyslového vlastnictví, zejména předsedovi Úřadu, panu Mgr. Ing. Josefu Kratochvílovi, PhD., jemuž jsme měli možnost projekt osobně představit a který tuto snahu o propagaci a zviditelnění českých vynálezů a inovací podpořil. Spolupráce bude mít řadu podob – od článků věnovaných ochraně duševního vlastnictví, přes terminologii (viz Blok „Slovník“) až např. po informace o formách ochrany u jednotlivých inovací.

The aeration thin-walled liner for a fishing vat is the result of research and development of the University of South Bohemia. It ensures a constant supply of oxygen and welfare to the fish in the tanks and is designed to be used easily and practically in commonly used tanks. It does not require a heavy load of hoses and does not restrict the catch of fish. The liner only needs to be made to fit the tubs used. The air and oxygenation hoses are conveniently hidden outside the vat liner and the oxygen dosage can be controlled by control valves. The liners are best used when fishing on the side of smaller ponds where good quality water is not consistently available to flush the tubs. They are also suitable for fish sorting and for fish stalls where they maintain good water quality. This saves the cost of using potable water to keep the water oxygenated. The lifetime of the liner can be counted on for decades. It is lightweight and easily portable.

The inserts are used, for example, by scientists from the Institute of Hydrobiology of the Biological Centre of the Czech Academy of Sciences. The functionality was verified in cooperation with the company ŠTIČÍ LÍHEŇ - ESOX, ltd. from Tábor.

The invention was awarded 2nd place in the JU Innovation competition for the best innovations of the University of South Bohemia for the years 2016 to 2020. In the following year, it succeeded in front of investors with the Sympathy Award in the prestigious national competition Transfera Technology Day 2021, organized by the Transfera.cz association, which brings together technology and knowledge transfer departments and staff of universities, academic and research institutes and cooperating companies in the Czech Republic.

The story of innovation

In 2017, Ing. Ján Regenda, PhD. from the Faculty of Fisheries and Water Conservation (Laboratory of Controlled Reproduction and Intensive Fish Breeding) of the University of South Bohemia, while fishing the Strpská Pond, noticed how the fish were suffering, gasping for breath, mainly due to the lack of oxygenated air. He was thinking how to solve this and came up with the idea of providing an independent air supply directly into the tubs, without the need for fresh water and without restricting the fishermen and the fish with the supply hose. Some inspiration came from the gas distribution in the shipping crates. In 2018, he took advantage of the offer of the Technology Transfer Office of the South Bohemian University under the leadership of RNDr. Mgr. Růžena Štemberková, PhD, MPA (head of the KTT of the South Bohemian University) and submitted a Proof-of-Concept project to the internal program funded by the GAMA1 program of the grant agency TAČR. With the money received, he submitted (and received) a patent application for the invention in 2019 and built a prototype of the device in 2020. The invention also excited other colleagues, with whom he filed 2 more projects and a European patent application. Within the OP Fisheries project, he also tested the efficiency of the insert with the company ŠTIČÍ LÍHEŇ - ESOX, spol. s r.o. or with colleagues from the Biological Centre of the CAS.

TRL: 8 - fully tested prototype. The product is not yet on the market. Looking for a business partner.

The start-up and former spin-off of the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences (IOCB CAS) and i&i Prague, company Diana Biotechnologies, Inc., thanks to its own method, supplies the market with PCR diagnostic tests from saliva, including a triple test for influenza, COVID and MS, and provides services for the development of drugs and monoclonal antibodies. The method allows very sensitive determination of the amount of enzymes and other proteins in solution, e.g. in human blood, urine or saliva. The company also includes subsidiaries Diana LAB and Diana Engineering.

The company now holds 40% of the COVID-19 PCR test market. To date, it is the largest Czech manufacturer of highly efficient PCR tests in the COVID era.

It employs about 100 people. It is an example of a successful, rocketing unicorn start-up. In 2021, its revenues grew by 330% to almost CZK 1 billion.

The company and its founders have won numerous awards since its founding in 2018. They won the EY Entrepreneur of the Year for the Central Bohemian Region in 2021, and Dr. Václav Navrátil won the Werner von Siemens Prize of the CAS for his method.

Their PCR diagnostics are patented in many countries around the world, including the USA.

The story of innovation

The company was founded in 2018 by a duo of scientists Martin Dienstbier, PhD. and Václav Navrátil, PhD. The name DIANA stands for "DNA - linked Inhibitor ANtibody Assay". The basis of the technology is a biochemical method that Dr. Václav Navrátil from the UOCHB CAS developed with his team in 2018. This method has made it possible to make detection kits for clinical diagnostics.

"Our clinical diagnostics will be applied, for example, to the examination of new tumour markers, where our method is ten thousand times more sensitive than conventional methods," Martin Dienstbier told Hospodářské noviny in 2019. In the same year, thanks to the investor group BTCZ Ventures, the company raised €3 million in seed capital, which enabled it to acquire and equip its own laboratories and hire additional top-notch staff.

Agrohydrogel is a newly developed gel from UTB Zlín. It is formed from whey, is environmentally friendly and made from renewable raw materials to increase water retention in the soil, e.g. forests. The gel reduces the negative effects of drought on agriculture. The hydrogel is able to retain moisture in the soil even in times of drought and breaks down into substances that are nutrients for plants.

Agrohydrogel should be an environmentally friendly alternative to currently available petroleum gels.

The gel can also be used in horticulture, in one's own gardens.

The story of innovation

Scientists from UTB, Centre for Polymer Systems, collaborated on the product with the Research Institute of Dairy Industry, LACRUM Velké Meziříčí s.r.o. and the Research Institute of Melioration and Soil Protection, v.v.i. They tested the gel in cooperation with the Forests of the Czech Republic s.p., specifically with the Forest Administration Buchlovice and the Forest Administration Strážnice. They hope that the gel will increase the chances of the plants taking hold in the soil.

The results of the research so far have shown an increase in soil retention capacity by 30-40 % and retention of rain or irrigation water in the soil for up to 50 % longer compared to soil without hydrogel.

The formulation is protected by a utility model. The university is now in negotiations with a corporate partner to deploy it in the market.

The story of innovation

The story of the Opál apple variety begins in the year 1960 at the Station for Breeding of the Apple Tree for Disease Resistance in Střížovice in the protected landscape area „Bohemian Paradise“, which is part of the UEB CAS. In the 1960s, a scientist, Dr. Jaroslav Tupý, began to look for a new variety resistant to the unsightly scab and fungal diseases that attacked apples. In 1992, he started growing resistant varieties of the F4 generation, known as Opál. Thanks to his contacts, Dr. Tupý began to actively market the varieties abroad. There is an interesting story about the penetration of the US market in particular. Dave Wail, a sales representative of Varieties International, LLC, took the apples in the trunk of his car, where he forgot them for a whole week. When he remembered, he expected to find rotten fruit that he would have to throw away. He was even more surprised when he opened the trunk of the car and found the apples in the same condition as if he had just bought them. No rot, no rust, no scab, still great taste. He returned to Dr. Tupý and entered into a licensing agreement with him. It was 2009. At that time, a new colleague, Dr. Černý, started to work on varieties at the institute. He took on technology transfer and commercialisation, intellectual property protection of apple varieties and contracting. To date, he has succeeded in obtaining both strategic global partners and valuable know-how for the sale of apple varieties. There is another story behind the success of apples. In 2015, the apples were selected and sent to the astronauts on the ISS directly by NASA itself. To this day, there is a unique photo of astronauts Terry Virts and Italian colleague Samantha Cristoforetti posing with fresh apples floating in weightlessness.

The story of innovation

Photo: www.hemagel.cz

The therapeutic preparation known on the market under the brand name Hemagel began to be developed in the 1990s. In 1997, Prof. Jiří Labský and his colleagues Dr. Jiří Vacík and MUDr. Pavel Hošek filed an invention application for which they obtained a national patent in 2004. The preparation was based on the same material, a hydrophilic polymer, which forms the contact lenses of the inventor and scientist Prof. Otto Wichterle, who patented it in 1955 as the hydrophilic gel polyHEMA. It is no coincidence that Hemagel was created at the same Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry of the CAS. In 2006, the Institute signed a licensing agreement for the production and marketing of the substance with VH Pharma a.s. It took half a year to convert laboratory production to industrial production. Because of the new substance, a new test method had to be developed in order to obtain the necessary certification. The first generation of the products was already launched on the market in 2007.

For their invention, Prof. Jiří Labský and MUDr. Karel Smetana, DrSc. received the prestigious Czech Head award in 2002.

The company was founded in 2020, however, the story of the company's main founders and authors of the idea Jakub Gemrot and Lukáš Kolek begins 8 years earlier in 2012. That's when Jakub Gemrot was invited to be the lead programmer for the Czechoslovakia 1938-1989 series, where he was involved in the development of an educational simulation. 4 years later, another part of PC game development was added at the instigation of students from the Mathematics and Physics Faculty of Charles University (Matfyz). By that time it was a project of an interdisciplinary working group between the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the Charels University. Thanks to their involvement in a project within the GAMA TAČR grant program, in which they created the now famous and internationally awarded game Attentat 1942, the founders got acquainted with the Charles University Centre for Technology Transfer (CPTT UK), CUIP and the possibilities of commercializing their games through the establishment of a start-up or spin-off company.

Researchers from the Institute for Contemporary History of the Academy of Sciences also contributed to the development of Attentat 1942 by providing knowledge of historical facts and data.

Among other things, the success of this game, and of CG, is evidenced by the fact that 7000 copies were sold under the CU banner before the company was founded.

In the 1990s, the Faculty of Fisheries and Water Conservation of the University of South Bohemia started breeding sturgeons. A unique feat for that time. More than 20 years later, in 2013, the faculty in the person of Ing. Václav Nebeský, PhD. with another novelty - a relatively globally unique method of obtaining black sturgeon eggs from live sturgeons without having to kill them. By gently pressing on the fish's abdomen, they force the sturgeons to spawn. The eggs are then used either for further fertilisation or to produce caviar. Those that are not suitable for either use are used to make cosmetics. Sales and marketing is handled by Ceskycaviar.cz s.r.o., a company the university met at Země živitelka and signed a 20-year licensing agreement in 2018 to sell cosmetic products.

The story of innovation

The shape is inspired by nature. The Spirula copies the logarithmic spiral that can be observed in the human ear or the shells of molluscs, for example. The product is unique for 2 more reasons - they are made of sand and a specially developed binder, using 3D printing technology made of silica sand. They also designed the electronics themselves.
